What is IoT?

"The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the network of physical devices, ranging from everyday household items to industrial machinery, that are connected to the internet and can collect, exchange, and act on data."

These smart devices contain sensors and software enabling mutual communication. In simpler terms: everyday objects gain the ability to sense the world around them, talk to each other, and take action, all without direct human input.

Real-World Examples of IoT

  1. Smart Homes: Devices like smart speakers, thermostats (Nest), and security cameras (Ring) enable remote home control and task automation. You can adjust your heating from the office or check who rang your doorbell from another country.
  2. Wearables: Fitness trackers and health monitors collect data on physical activity, heart rate, and sleep patterns, turning your body into a continuous data stream that can flag issues before they become problems.
  3. Industrial IoT (IIoT): Manufacturing uses sensors to monitor equipment, optimize supply chains, and predict maintenance needs. A machine that tells you it needs servicing before it breaks down saves enormous costs compared to unplanned downtime.
  4. Smart Cities: IoT improves public services through adaptive streetlights that dim when no one is around and air quality monitoring that feeds real-time data to city planners.

Why IoT Matters

  1. Efficiency: Automation reduces waste. Smart irrigation systems, for example, water crops only when soil moisture sensors indicate it's needed, conserving both water and energy.

A Brief History of IoT

  • 1980s: Early connectivity exploration, researchers begin experimenting with networked machines.
  • 1999: Kevin Ashton coins the term "Internet of Things" while working on RFID supply chain projects at Procter & Gamble.
  • 2000s: Wireless technology and cloud computing advance rapidly, laying the infrastructure IoT depends on.
  • 2010s: IoT expands massively with the proliferation of smartphones and affordable smart devices.
  • Today: Billions of connected devices worldwide, and the number keeps climbing.

The Dark Side of IoT: Poor Implementation

Not every connected device deserves to exist. The market has seen its share of questionable implementations: smart forks that judge how fast you eat, connected toilets with companion apps, the infamous Juicero juicer (a $400 Wi-Fi-enabled machine that squeezed proprietary juice packs, which you could squeeze just as well by hand), and Wi-Fi-enabled coffee makers of dubious necessity.

These examples raise a question worth keeping in mind whenever someone pitches you an "IoT solution": does connectivity genuinely add value here, or is it connectivity for its own sake? Good engineering means knowing when not to add a radio.
